The short version

Both are good products with different shapes. The right choice depends on your firm.

Choose MoneyGuidePro if…

  • You want a goals-based planning tool that is fast to run in client meetings, with interactive what-if tools like the Play Zone
  • You want published per-advisor pricing and the option to add cash-flow and advanced estate planning (Wealth Studios) when you need it
  • Your firm already runs on Envestnet or Tamarac, and plan data flowing into those systems matters to you

Choose RK Sterling if…

  • You want One-Click Plans: AI drafts the complete plan (goals, assumptions, toggles, and scenarios) from household data, so building a plan takes a click and a review instead of hours of setup
  • You want planning, tax analysis, CRM, documents, meeting notes, and research in one platform that shares household data
  • You prefer a free platform with unlimited team members over per-advisor annual subscriptions and per-user add-ons

What is MoneyGuidePro?

MoneyGuidePro was launched in 2000 by PIEtech, a company that had been building planning software since 1985. Envestnet acquired PIEtech in 2019, and the product is now sold as Envestnet | MoneyGuide. Its core product, MoneyGuide, is goals-based planning: retirement distribution, Social Security optimization, risk tolerance, stress testing, tax planning strategies, a client planning portal, an online fact finder, and the Play Zone for testing variables live with a client.

Wealth Studios adds detailed cash-flow planning and advanced estate strategies (trusts, gifting, entities, family tree, and ultra-high-net-worth planning). Dash, introduced in 2026, is a lightweight planning experience that advisors can embed on their website so prospects and smaller clients can start a plan with minimal data gathering. MyBlocks is a set of client-facing educational modules. Its spring 2026 release added AI Summarize, which condenses Plan Notes into a single summary, and new planning strategies such as delayed RMDs and deferred compensation distributions.

MoneyGuide publishes list prices per advisor and relies on integrations for the rest of the stack: CRMs including Redtail and Wealthbox, custodians, and portfolio platforms. It offers an MCP connector that gives Claude a plan snapshot (plan health, goals, and net worth summary). By scope it is planning software: not a CRM, meeting notetaker, document management system, or practice-wide AI platform.

What is RK Sterling?

RK Sterling shares MoneyGuide's view that a plan should be quick to build and easy to discuss with a client, but it gets there differently. Sterling's One-Click Plans have AI draft the complete plan from data already in the platform: modeling goals, assumptions, toggles, and scenarios are built out automatically, so the advisor's job starts at review. The plan then connects directly to the CRM record, documents, meeting notes, and client-ready content in the same system.

RK Sterling is an integrated AI platform for financial advisors, founded in 2025 and based in Denver, Colorado. Rather than assembling a stack of separate tools for planning, CRM, meeting notes, email, and documents, Sterling combines them in a single platform where every feature works from the same household data.

The platform includes an Advice Engine that surfaces client-specific opportunities, advice management, financial planning with One-Click Plans (AI drafts the complete plan with goals, toggles, and scenarios for advisor review), tax analysis, AI-powered research with full household context, a CRM with workflows, workspaces, and tasks, document storage, a firm-branded client portal where clients see the plans, documents, and tasks their advisor shares with them, fact extraction from documents, an AI notetaker, AI email, an MCP connector that lets Claude build PowerPoint, Word, and Excel files from household data, and integrations with Schwab, Fidelity, and Microsoft Outlook and Teams.

The Sterling platform is free for every firm, with no platform fee, no seat fees, and no household tiers. AI features are usage-based, so firms pay only for the AI work they use. Client data is never used to train AI models, AI access is controlled per household, and audit logs are designed for SEC examinations.

RK Sterling

Free platform. No seats, no tiers. Usage-based AI.

  • The platform is free: no platform fee, no seat fees, no household tiers
  • Unlimited team members and unlimited households for every firm

A worked example

A four-advisor firm on the MoneyGuide Platform bundle pays $12,000 per year, or about $1,000/month, before add-ons such as account aggregation at $400 per user per year. RK Sterling's platform is free for the whole firm, covering planning plus CRM, documents, notetaker, email, and research, with AI billed only on usage. The scopes differ: MoneyGuide is a dedicated planning tool with a long track record, while Sterling covers the full practice workflow. The pricing models differ too: per-advisor annual subscriptions versus a free platform with usage-based AI.

Where MoneyGuidePro is the better fit

  • You want goals-based planning that is quick to present and adjust live in a meeting, and you do not need every plan to be a detailed cash-flow model
  • You value published, predictable per-advisor pricing and want to add cash-flow or estate depth only when a client needs it
  • Your firm is already on Envestnet, and plan data showing up inside proposal workflows and client records is part of your process

Where RK Sterling is the better fit

  • Plan-building speed is the bottleneck: Sterling's One-Click Plans draft the entire model from data the platform already holds, turning hours of setup per plan into a review pass
  • You want plans, tax insights, meeting notes, documents, and CRM in one system that shares household data instead of several integrated subscriptions
  • Per-firm pricing with unlimited team members fits your growth better than per-advisor subscriptions plus per-user add-ons

Frequently asked questions

Is RK Sterling an alternative to MoneyGuidePro?

For financial planning, yes. Sterling includes planning and tax analysis as part of an integrated advisor platform. MoneyGuide is dedicated goals-based planning software with optional cash-flow and estate depth and published pricing; Sterling trades that single-tool focus for an integrated platform covering CRM, documents, meeting notes, research, and advice workflow on a free platform with usage-based AI.

How does RK Sterling pricing compare to MoneyGuidePro?

MoneyGuide publishes list prices of $2,000 to $3,000 per advisor per year depending on the package, plus per-user add-ons for aggregation, Dash, MyBlocks, and risk profiling (as of November 2026). The Sterling platform is free with unlimited team members, and AI is usage-based, so you pay only for what you use.

Does MoneyGuidePro include a CRM, document storage, or a meeting notetaker?

No. MoneyGuide integrates with CRMs such as Redtail and Wealthbox and with other tools in the advisor tech ecosystem rather than providing them. RK Sterling includes a CRM, document storage with fact extraction, an AI notetaker, and AI email natively.

What AI does each product offer?

MoneyGuide's spring 2026 release added AI Summarize, which condenses a plan's notes into a single summary, and MoneyGuide offers an MCP connector so Claude can read a plan snapshot. Sterling's One-Click Plans have AI draft the complete plan from household data, and Sterling applies AI across the practice: research with household context, an advice engine, meeting notes, drafted emails, and client-ready files built in Claude through Sterling's MCP connector, with household-level AI consent controls and audit logs designed for SEC examinations.

Can I use RK Sterling and MoneyGuidePro together?

Yes. Some firms keep a dedicated planning tool while using Sterling for CRM, documents, meeting notes, research, and advice workflow. You do not have to replace everything at once.
