Document Permissions

Every document in Sterling belongs to a household. Access to documents is controlled at the household level, meaning anyone on your team with access to a household can view and manage all of its documents.

Household-Based Access

Sterling uses a simple access model: if you can see a household, you can see its documents. This applies to all team members at your firm who have been granted access to that household.

All or Nothing

There are no per-file permissions. Team members either have full access to all household documents or no access at all.

What Team Members Can Do

Any team member with household access can perform all document operations:

  • View and download any document
  • Upload new files
  • Create, rename, and delete folders
  • Move and copy files between folders
  • Generate secure upload links for clients
  • Mark documents as redacted

Client Access

Clients do not have direct access to view household documents. To collect documents from clients, generate a secure upload link. Clients can use this link to upload files without logging in or seeing existing documents.

Marking Sensitive Documents

For compliance purposes, you can mark documents as redacted. This adds a visible badge to the file but does not restrict access. All team members with household access can still view redacted documents.
