Tasks Overview
Tasks help you organize and track client work. Every action item, follow-up, and implementation step lives in your task list. Sterling provides a flexible structure to break down complex work into manageable pieces.
Task Structure
Tasks follow a three-level hierarchy designed for detailed work breakdown:
- Tasks: Top-level work items organized by household
- Steps: Mid-level breakdown within a task
- SubSteps: Granular action items within steps
Each level includes an assignee, priority, status, and optional due date. Assign work to yourself, the client, or others. Set priority to High, Medium, Low, or None.

Managing Tasks
Click any task to expand and view its details. From there you can edit the description, change the assignee, adjust priority, or set a due date. Mark tasks complete when finished. Completing a task automatically completes all steps and substeps within it.
Drag and drop tasks to reorder them by priority. Delete tasks you no longer need.
View Modes
The Tasks page offers two ways to view your work:
- Household View: Tasks grouped by household in expandable cards. See task counts and next-step assignments at a glance. Best for managing multiple accounts.
- List View: All tasks in a single flat list. Quickly prioritize across all households. Reassign tasks between households as needed.
Toggle between views using the switcher in the toolbar. Your preference saves automatically.
Workspaces
Every task can have a Workspace: a dedicated area for notes, guidance, and supporting documents. Open the workspace to add detailed instructions, attach files, or access partner tools. Workspaces keep everything related to a task in one place.
